The Gift of Olfactory – aka. Supporting Evidence For My Institutionalisation
Hello.
This is the last time you will ever hear from me as I need to remove myself completely from you—out of respect for your future relationship, but more importantly, out of respect for me.
Firstly, I want to apologise for some of my erratic behaviour over the phone—I should have immediately accepted and respected your decision. I am sorry for bargaining and pleading and putting you in a hard position. I appreciate you setting firm boundaries and I trust that you put in a lot of thought making this decision. It wouldn’t have been easy, and I am truly remorseful I made it harder than it needed to be.
In saying that, when we first reconnected, I said that this would be the last time I’d be opening this door and that if it were to end, then that is where we end permanently. I am staying faithful to that notion—you have chosen to pursue someone else and I am truly happy for you and hope it works out. But I am not a second choice—or a back up—and I have no interest in being a fall back option if it doesn’t go the way you hoped with this other person.
We are both writers—good writers—and I have decided that you deserve to know the full extent of what I had planned for this evening. I need to write out this date for me, so I can close this chapter, and have it serve as a reminder of how thoughtful of a lover I am going to be for someone else one day. If it inspires your writing, or validates you, or helps you, then that is what I hope for. I truly do.
But let me be clear—this is not an attempt at changing your mind, but rather an exploration of what could’ve been had you chosen this path with me.
Written 26th October 2025:
Arthur,
Tonight I will be taking you out on a date that I have planned very carefully. I have taken all I’ve learned about you, incorporated elements of me, and hope to see how we blend this night together. I will preface by saying that everyone I’ve told about this idea for you has said that this was far too intense for a third date, but I thought that was hyperbolic of them. I considered keeping this low-key and thought about spreading some of these elements over multiple occasions we spend time together, but I am not going to minimise how much I feel for you anymore. I’m not interested in playing any more games and I truly just want to take you out for a night that I hope you will remember.
There is also another layer to tonight that I hope to explore with you—I am sure you’re aware of the five senses but as we’re both writers, I thought it would be fun to explore the following; visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory and tactile. Before our evening together begins, I will be showing you my interpretation of olfactory, followed by gustatory, auditory, visual and then finally, tactile, throughout various points of the date. I hope you truly lean in to this journey with me and are stimulated in ways you haven’t been before. With that being said, let me take control and trust that I am in this moment with you. I want to be here and I’m showing up ready to go all in. I hope you are able to meet me halfway. I’m writing this down because I wanted to communicate my intentions clearly as I tend to jumble my words verbally when I am with you.
Need a drink? Let me organise that… As well as the first sense we will be exploring. Olfactory.
With affection,
Ellie x
Cocktail: Spicy Mango Margarita
30ml Tequila
15ml Cointreau
15ml Lime Juice
90ml Mango Nectar
12-14 Small Chunks of Frozen Mango
Blend all ingredients together in a blender.
Garnish: Chilli Salt Rim & Freeze Dried Mango Piece
Olfactory: A Bouquet of Roses with Baby’s-breath.
Written 28th October 2025:
Arthur,
Olfactory is where I’m starting tonight’s journey and I hope these roses will imprint on you. I remember you making a comment about my perfume on the first night I went to your place and it stuck with me—I wear that perfume everyday now. I truly believe scent can teleport you to a different time—my “Love Story” incense body spray takes me back to forteen when I was in Year Nine and my “Juicy Couture Perfume” takes me back to February 2017 where I met you at the fringe. I nearly wore that one but have refrained… Perhaps I remembered to wear it tonight.
I am currently writing this at 10pm Tuesday evening and our date is four days away. Back on track—roses; romantic, my middle name and the narcissistic part of me wants you to think of me once this night is over every time you smell the scent of the bouquet. But not just me—us, this evening together, and how much I truly do feel for you. I’ve always despised gendered stereotypes; all people deserve to have flowers bought for them, and to be wined and dined, and to receive romance—not just give it. So, here is my sense, gifted to you, in the form of olfactory. I hope you don’t get hay fever.
With affection,
Ellie x
Dinner: Artusi By Night
The gift of gustatory to be given afterward.
Gustatory: Macro Mike Double Choc Chip Pancake Mixture & 250g Kicco Luxuria Coffee Beans.
Written 29th October 2025:
Arthur,
“You taste just like Sunday morning” is one of my favourite song lyrics of all time and I finally understood the meaning and intensity of that feeling when we kissed again after all this time. My exploration of gustatory is through an idea for one day down the track. Macro Mike pancakes, (which you are going to LOVE or I will jump off a building—not a hyperbole, but a fact) coffee, (from my place of work for it is a beautiful blend of bean), and a full day in bed together. We could write, talk, make love, read—just a whole day of you and me.
That visual of us together truly tastes so sweet to me. I love to cook and I would love to do that for you one day. I often find myself struggling to show my affection through acts of service. It’s easy to buy a gift or use my words with a hint of inflection in my tone to come across as sincere, but impulsively taking initiative and running an errand, or preparing their favourite meal, is hard for me. But I am trying—and would love to blow your tastebuds away one evening. As well as you. I hope you enjoyed dinner… And still have room for dessert. Unfortunately, it’s not Macro Mike pancakes.
With affection,
Ellie x
Dessert: Eggless Dessert Cafe
The gift of auditory to be given afterward.
Auditory: Absolut Pears 1L Vodka

Arthur,
Listening to people is something we all do on a day-to-day basis—hearing someone is a true rarity, and to me, you are worth being heard. I try to remember every little thing you tell me about your life because I care about you. For example, a detail you told me a decade ago, the pear vodka, was a fact I’ve retained and now associate with you. It’s a key to ensure it sparks joy within you. On the Thursday evening we reconnected, you told me it was only available through importing the spirit—turns out that wasn’t the case.
Whatever you choose to confide within me, I will be listening, forever. It is currently Friday night; I haven’t had time to write you the past two evenings but you have been on my mind. When I say I have been counting the days down until this date, I am not exaggerating. This whole week has been about being in this moment with you. You are so special, and I have never done anything like this for someone else in my life. There is, and always has been, something so enchanting about you that draws in my whole being. Arthur, you are a rarity—just like the pear vodka, and I vow to never make you feel any less than what you are—exquisite. I hope you hear me.
With affection,

Activity: “The Black Queen” Escape Room by Adventure Rooms Adelaide
The gift of visual to be given afterward.
Visual: Fallen Through by Ellie Cram
Written 31st October 2025:
Arthur,
You have seen glimpses of the real me; my true personality blooms when I’m with you. I want you to learn about my past experiences so you can understand why I struggle with vulnerability. You asked I beam my history into your brain so you could understand; fortunately for you, my novel goes pretty into detail about a lot of my history and how its shaped who I am today. I hope it paints a picture and that you can see me a little more clearly afterward.
Tomorrow, it will be November and this is the time for me to let you see more. I can only hope I’ve entered the night as confident as I planned, but I am not perfect—I misspelled fourteen in one of my previous letters and only noticed upon my fifth reread. I recognise that perfection is overrated and that it only supports the idea that I seem disingenuous, but I want to be what I think you deserve after every awful thing you’ve gone through—perfection; a helper, not a hinderance—an ally, not an enemy—someone who would be there for you in a heartbeat.
The more emotion you stir within me, the less in control I feel—and I’m not used to being my lover’s adversary at times. So, if you don’t want perfection and you truly do want to see who I truly am—no filters and masks—I am here showing you, and over time, I hope you do like her.
With affection,
Ellie x
End of the Date, back at Arthur’s place.
The gift of tactile to be given there.
Tactile: Love Letter and Kikki K Writer Rollergel Pens
Written 1st November 2025:
Arthur,
When you think of touch, our minds tend to go to physical, but tonight, I have written something that I hope touches you emotionally as well. I want to give myself to you—and pleasure you, even though my beautiful body has delighted me with a surprise period, I want to set your physical being on fire. I want to nurture you in the way you took care of me the last time—I want to show you that I’ve finally arrived and am ready to let you in; no more being guarded, no more fragmented mind; just me—the most vulnerable I’ve ever been with anybody in a long time.
Our date is tonight and I have the biggest smile on my face. I have been patiently waiting for all these pieces to fall into place and I have finally organised it all and can just relax. I cannot wait to show you. I hope I’ve left a mark and impression on you. When we first physically reconnected, I’m not sure if you noticed, but tears leaked from my eyes. I got very emotional and physically felt the ice around my heart melt there and then. I was shocked at how much I am already feeling for you, but I said I would trust you—and I do. I hope the ways in which I’ve shown you tonight demonstrate how much I have cared—and do care—this whole time. I just am sorry it took me so long to show it. With that being said, here is my gift of tactile, to you. I wrote this last week, the morning after our phone call.
With affection,
Ellie x
Written 25th October 2025:
Arthur,
I am writing you this letter to let you know that I have chosen you—all of my other connections have been severed and I have deleted the dating apps. I have decided to fully commit to the prospect of you and me as I know there’s a real chance for us to finally happen after all of these years. I don’t expect you to take the same steps I have until you’re ready, but even if we eventually learn that we are not aligned, I will regret not taking a chance on you.
To me, you always were the one who got away and I always wondered about what could’ve been. I am certain that I will be okay if it’s not meant to be, but I want to give you my all. If we fail, it won’t be for my lack of trying. You say that practicing how to love someone is the least romantic thing you ever heard, but I would like to challenge that notion.
I don’t practice how to love someone—I practice listening and truly hearing someone—I practice remembering little details that seem insignificant—and I practice thinking of ways to make my lover feel seen. Loving someone is a choice; practicing ways to show up for them is an action I do. I intend to give you your fairytale and I hope you think about the date I’ve began planning, accustomed to what I’ve learned about you so far. I think that deep down, you’re always worried that no one will truly know you—and I might not for a while—but I can try and I promise to continue to try.
All I want from you in return is… You. I get to be yours… After all this time… That feels exquisite. I don’t mind if you don’t know how to love, but if you know how to be there and stay, even if you want to run, then that’s all I truly need. You are everything I have wanted and I can see you being everything to me. I am committed to you and if you let me in, I will stand by your side through it all. We accept the love we think we deserve, and I think you deserve the world, even if you don’t believe that.
So, I’m yours, for now, but hopefully for a long time. And I hope one day, you’ll be mine.
With love,
Ellie x
In another life, this likely would’ve been the best night of our lives. I am mourning what could’ve been and there were so many tears typing those hand-written notes up for you to see. But, I needed them to be seen—to be read—to maybe even be used as inspiration for someone else.
Based on how hollow I’m feeling, I know deep down I love you. I have always loved you from afar and having a taste of you for it to be ruthlessly ripped away is devastating. But, if there was one thing you are right about, I will be okay. The world continues to spin and I am going to live and love and be true to who I am. And at least we get some lovely art out of it.
I wish you the best. If you’ve made it this far, I thank you, and I hope maybe in an alternate universe, you would’ve felt seen.
‘Goodbye’
Arthur,
Well, hi. It seems you’ve found yourself on my website again. I figured the best way to have this discussion would be for you to voluntarily come here—and if you don’t, perhaps I’ll send it in the form of a letter six months down the road.
Well, it’s not really a discussion, is it? It is the inner workings of my mind trying to figure out what happened—and I finally have.
First of all—accountability. I don’t think words could ever express how sorry I am for how I have behaved. I know I don’t have much credibility to my name, but I can vow to God that I have never, not once, lied to you—and every word of this letter is the truth.
Last Sunday, my only job for the day was to renew my script at the chemist for my antidepressants; I take Lexapro—it has come to my attention that I have been taking Fluoxetine for the past week. It has completely thrown my psyche into disarray and I have never treated anyone in my whole life the way I treated you last night. I am appalled, ashamed and I am going to have to live with this for the rest of my life. I accept that and take full responsibility for my behaviour. It was scary, dangerous, and I am so sorry for ever putting you in that situation.
I have taken the week off of to get some serious help—my family are aware of what has happened and how I feel I am a danger to myself right now. I hope I am able to regulate and repair my mental health—and I will—but I am sorry it has only been made apparent at such a cost.
If you need reimbursement, you are more than welcome to reach out with a numerical amount as to what I owe you. For both of our safety, if you choose to seek reparation, please message my mother, Elaine Cram, on Facebook Messenger.
I truly had no idea I was on the verge of falling apart and throwing away my humanity in the way I did. I had no idea how broken I was deep down, and I will be taking care of myself to ensure I fix this and that nothing like this will ever happen again. I am not used to being the monster—I normally write about them—and for doing to you what was done to me… I am so sorry.
Through this journey with you, I have learned a lot about myself and what I truly need to work on in order to move forward. You have made me a better writer, and I hope that I can eventually become a better person. So, thank you for that.
However, if I could go back and undo reconnecting with you—let me be clear—I would. From my understanding, it is clear to me that you have not changed. I still think you are the same man that you were when we were eighteen, and it’s a real shame. In fact—I identified it on night one when I showed you a passage from my novel that reminded me of you. Arthur—you don’t feel emotion—you use it as a tool to feign connection. You love-bombed me. You gaslit me. You didn’t only meet that level of affection and emotion—you set it. You were the one who invited me in with past traumas and bonding moments, only to pull the rug out from under me one week after writing me that love letter.
People don’t like being your social experiments; you study human relationships and break them down to logic and chemical reactions. As a result, you know exactly how to behave to ensure someone shows you their most vulnerable parts. You are a charmer, and promise the idea of a connection… Until you screen them and drop them because they don’t fit into your life anymore. You are wonderful at creating connections—but have there ever been any that have been long lasting?
This is why I’m a better writer than you—and why I was published first—because my emotions are real and felt by my readers. Your writing reads as cold and calculated, with a patronising overtone. As does your presence.
Arthur, in no way, shape, or form, am I excusing my behaviour—no matter how much you hurt me, nothing will ever justify my behaviour last night—however, if this is the third, or maybe fortieth time some demon from your past has done this to you… I would really suggest you reconsider how you treat people. You lack empathy, and I hate to say it, but based on my experience with you, I think you have sociopathic tendencies.
In your Essay, you wrote: “It is my hope that my past relationships, even the rocky ones, can look back on our history and enjoy some of the positive memories, or find something to take away from our time together.”
I wish I could, Arthur, but I can’t. As much as this is goodbye and it is over, and I wished it didn’t have to be ugly… It just is. As beautiful as you and I could’ve been, I think deep down I always knew you weren’t right for me—I was always anxious, and it was my intuition trying to warn me what I already knew: you were still the same boy who poses as a man now.
So—to recap—I am truly sorry for the boundaries I violated, and for my behaviour. I will make financial amends if sought. I will never be contacting you again. Your number and socials are blocked, your address deleted and I have no intentions of ever reopening connection between us.
Goodbye Arthur. I regret my actions last night so much… But I regret reigniting us more.
Pear-Shaped
The pear-flavoured vodka sits quietly on the shelf.
Once thought to be a missing puzzle piece, it doesn’t quite fit.
The spirit is restless, begging to be sipped.
I’m haunted by your silence.
The pear cider back in February 17′
Our first date, where we boarded a roller coaster,
foretold the 8 year journey between you and I.
Infinity once thought—
Going around in circles now believed.
No longer my favourite number.
You marvelled at my hourglass figure,
in awe of my unwavering show of love.
Valentine’s Day spent, and you were ready then.
My instincts still told me to run from you.
A reunion half a decade overdue.
We were supposed to be grown,
Poached by you while entangled with others.
You claimed this was the universe aligned—
But aren’t the stars we see already dead?
Pear-shaped; balloon burst.
The party is over now.
8 days down, I ask—
My power for your poison.
What was mine is no longer yours.
Can I have myself back?
Ever—
Evergreen—will I be?
I received one ring—you misunderstood.
Almost chosen again, but never enough.
Maniacal, vile bile burned my oesophagus.
Bitter Betty—always the bridesmaid.
Everred—well, you made your bed.
Rage racing reading reflections on relationships.
Emotionally literate on paper,
yet you bleed contradiction.
Everblue—eternity again without you.
Extraction of infatuation.
The itsy bitsy spider—
drowned in the waterspout
Invalidation floods from your words.
Tidal waves of avoidance; a tidal shift of mind.
Ever inconvenienced
Parking ticket—
you left.
Flat tyre—
you left.
Something ever so safe?
You stayed.
Logic overrides rarity—according to your theory
Everlasting wonder: “what could’ve been?”
I wish you’d call me.
Holding my breath for fresh ink on your page.
I mustn’t be remarkable—no words for me,
but thousands for you
Four ever dissecting this post-mortem.
How did something so beautiful die so young?
Self-inflicted sabotage? Too little. Too late?
Unrequited love asphyxiates the heart—
may she rest in peace
Evermore of you missing as each day passes.
Long gone—eventually forgotten
I would’ve answered, had you remained.
But the everglades hold our everted remains.
Arthur Street
A wrong turn took me down Arthur street,
the radio reacted with a song about you.
Quiet quiver of lips—
Hands hardening on wheel with grip.
Soft strands of hair underneath your fingernails.
Until you pulled it.
Passing by an empty playground—
No shrieks of laughter to be heard.
Happy Birthday to you—your friend swinging from a tree.
Their confidence undone by the confidant who couldn’t stay.
A habit of yours I’m familiar with.
Floating feathers of fledgling failed to take flight—
I ran over the remains
Birds my most favourite of creatures—
until your talons enucleated me.
Reminding me—you need to read to write.
Mimic their voice in the bid to feign emotion.
Paper cut by your paper doll.
Avoidance and ambivalence stain your words.
Driving by a cathedral as your article sends through
I don’t recall subscribing to mediocrity.
“Please turn off your mobile phone”
Forgot—shocked—dropped crockery and smashed.
The tables turned and stared.
Remembering—speeding home with a bouquet of roses
Click, cry and collecting—not enough time to cancel
Once perfect, now wilted and sagging—
waiting to die.
Swerving into the second lane,
headlights angrily flash—
But I saw a pedestrian with your eyes.
My rearview confirms it was not you.
A stop sign waits at the end of the street—
But I drive on through
Once perfect—now shattered
Some things Parish
long before they perish
The Letter That Wouldn’t Stay A Poem
Body attuned to survival—
Hollowness drowns out the need to nourish.
Don’t cry because it’s over—I do.
Smile because it happened—I wish it didn’t.
What ifs bouncing around my brain like a pinball machine
I tried leaving—why didn’t you let me go then?
So many questions. Spiral. Survival.
You shut off your feelings like a tap—
Demean them to just a part of the process.
Not a hyperbole—but this has made me want to die.
I would’ve given you my hand.
Give me yours for thou shalt not steal.
You made me believe so much that I believed too—
with one stupid letter I wish I never read.
You abandoned me. You blindsided me.
So many questions.
How did that earn second place?
How did someone beat the standard we set on those evenings together?
How dare you walk away from us?
How could anything compare?
How could you do this to me—again?
I hope you bet on the wrong horse; relationships reduced to projects to experiment your flawed methodology on. I was only at Step 1 in your mind when I would’ve plucked the stars out of the sky for your fucking happiness.
You were so cold over the phone; how do you just block it out? Leave me to wither and burn? How do I stop crying over you? I have no closure. I never want to speak with you again—but I want to gift you a Christmas present. I want to pour the pear vodka down the sink.
I’ve wept—not cried. My sobs echo down the street; my heart ripped from my body. You strung me along. You are a coward. This is one of the worst things anyone has ever done to me.
Take some accountability for you are not perfect. You are so self-righteous and act like you are so superior—but at least I have a heart that functions normally. I feel so intensely that every same experience we share, mine will be felt that much greater. You will never know what it’s like to love deeply.
How could you say that I was the only person you’d shared certain lived experiences with? You made me feel like I was the one. You made me feel like I was worth putting pen to paper. I am sick of crying every few sentences I write about you—us. I should’ve known you were still the narcissistic child who only has the planet orbit around his needs.
I hate how you’ve handled this—I hate how you belittled what we had to a pity paragraph with a half-hearted offer of friendship—like I was crazy to feel like what we shared was more than what it was. You act like our story was overrated, but it was my entire world. I was still writing the book of you and I when you tore up the pages.
You are the worst person I ever met.
I chose kindness and grace when leaving—I faked a smile, acknowledged the emotion there and exited stage left. But—if you’re reading this and lurking in the archives of my mind—I fucking hate you. One day, I am going to forget you and if I remember you, I will feel indifferent. You are a blemish on my record, just like the outlier you always were.
I forgot about you for half a decade because you are not remarkable. You weren’t worth my memory.
Now, I get to profit off of you with books and poetry; squeeze every last drop of inspiration out before discarding like an empty carcass. I’m going to be the best wife someday—you’ll probably end up in a gutter. You go and drink yourself to death every day—always with a red in hand—because sobriety is too real, isn’t it?
You fantasised about what I’d be like tipsy because you haven’t seen me inebriated before. I have self-control, and care about my health—especially when considering whether I’m drinking for the right reasons. You fill your time with people and slot them in so your calendar is permanently full. But it’s because you’re afraid of being alone because you have to live with you.
You act like you’ve learned from all these experiences and that you are some sort of messiah to teach life lessons to vulnerable people. You wrote an article about relationship roadmaps and it was the saddest piece I’ve ever read; who in their right mind demeans and belittles relationships to a step-by-step process?
Labels real feelings as just a human reaction that would subside over time? That the only fucking way for there to be a successful love affair is to abide by the flawed rules set in the roadmap? I didn’t think you were boring, but God, I do now.
You neglect to discuss one simple factor that plays into every relationship explored; chemistry. You downplay feelings to focus on logic every chance you get and even if you met “the one”, you’d better not take that leap of faith until step three of your fucking process. Taking it slow doesn’t guarantee it’s a lifetime commitment and adhering to your methodology is the least romantic thing I ever heard.
There’s a reason why you’ve had awful experiences—you treat people like they are disposable. You make them feel safe, encourage them to show you their most vulnerable part, and then you discard them. The few times you have been burned in return is because you look for yourself in your lovers—who kindly return the favour.
I pray this is the case with your next partner and that by monogamously exploring that connection, you get the fuck out of my city, my country, my galaxy—because if I run into you, I will physically crumple to the ground. You’ve let me down too many times to count on one hand now.
The worst part is—you broke my heart. I wanted to be the one to show you how to colour your universe again—how joy could be discovered in the quiet. I was shocked you chose someone else one week after writing that letter.
Did you send that piece to all of your lovers before settling on the one with the nicest eyes? Or slimmer stomach? You hurt me so bad that I fear I can’t stop crying. I am so scared this pain is everlasting. I thought your written words was an invitation to love you—but it was a warning to stay away. I went down the Rabbit Hole and all I’ve experienced is madness; fragmented and scared by the rapid changing of feelings. I haven’t experienced this in a long time; I used to have control. Fuck you.
You ruined the colour red for me; I physically recoil when I look at my nails. It only reminds me of the fire you brought out of me—and how you loved redheads. I’m charred black and all ash remains.
It hasn’t stopped raining since you broke the news, and an atmospheric dam has flooded.
The weather matches my eyes; it hasn’t stopped for two three days. Grief stricken and frozen in time—yet I still crave being put on pause every time you need space to feel, and politely phrased it as being fragile. I was fragile too.
An elderly lady dropped her purse in the grocery line. Normally, I’d instinctively move to pick it up—that’s my character. I am so bitter and hollow because of you, I didn’t even try to help her. You have stripped all the good in me and made me like the rest of the world—you force me into this rat race where kindness is a rarity. I fought and persevered, believing that the universe was leading me in the direction I needed to go. Well, why the fuck did it point me back to you? What bad karma did I earn to have to go through this—again?
I thought you were my soul mate, but you were just soulless and now mine is missing; have you seen it? I am empty now—just existing—no spark of uniqueness left within me after you.
My name reduced to only a letter; a pet name supposed to be endearing but foreshadowed the minimisation of my being. I’d been made a number, and you continued the trend. “El”—I never thought you’d do that to me.
The guilt money sent to recuperate some of the wasted funds I invested in us—your middle name the same as the only other monster I felt this way for. But it wouldn’t be a fair comparison—you’re that much worse because you’re much older and still did what you did.
Your touch still echoes on my body and I feel creepy critters crawling under my skin. Larvae buried deep within my stomach; no matter how many times I retch, I can’t get rid of your imprint. Not enough time has passed and you’re still all over me.
You are outrunning a tsunami worth of karma, but one day, your legs won’t work. It’s after you—it’s going to get you—and I’m going to watch you burn.
The Night That Never Was
Heels click against the pavement in a rapid fashion, eager to see you. Nerves ping pong inside of me, but excitement trumps the fear. My hand written notes stowed secretly in my coat pocket, and the mere thought of your eyes make me melt.
“Well, hi.” I can hardly contain my joy as I pull you into my arms. I’m finally home—I’m ready to be yours now. Details of the night revealed in my writing, intrigue splashed across your face. Is this the fairytale you’ve been asking for delivered straight to your doorstep?
The scent of roses fill the room as we sip at our drinks. Polite discussion at first—before secrets are shared and I truly engage with your words. I give you my hand and you squeeze it as the revelations spill—“No one’s ever done anything like this for me. No one’s ever seen me. You really do, don’t you?”
Our dinner reservation rudely interrupts—I take you to my favourite gnocchi bar south of the city. I can grit through Italian food in favour of the red wine, and the way you look at me from across the table suggests you’re impressed. They complement that smile you’ve had plastered on your face all evening; you don’t even care that your cheeks are in agony!
Dessert with one spoon for two; a coffee for me to delay fatigue from the busy Saturday I don’t normally work—swapped shifts so I could give you my full night… and potentially my morning. Gifts of gustatory and auditory beam the Sunday dream into fruition. Maybe when this night ends, you’ll want me tomorrow.
Puzzles and mind games—the fun kind—when we escape the Adventure Room together. Collaboration and team work reflects how we’d love; it didn’t matter if we were successful at unlocking every door, but there was no one on Earth I’d rather be trapped in this room with. Patterns and colours align like looking through a kaleidoscope when we revisit you and me; it’s our time now. We were always destined to find our way back.
A week’s worth of soliloquies bottled up inside, but your eyes make me weak at the knees. You know the look you give me holds so much raw power. So much so, I would bow to you, lay down my sword and submit to you, my king.
The downpour still comes and our first attempt to sprint to the car fails as we are unable to outrun the heaviness of the rain—so we embrace it—and each other. Kissing so furiously, dress hoisted, you consume my whole body with your touch and I let you in. We weathered the storm together. My love for you so otherworldly by now.
I walk you back to your apartment and present my final letter—this unlocks an invitation inside. You hold me close as I show my cards; I am yours, forevermore. Our connection is timeless and a phonograph plays as we dance slowly. I stumble, but you grip me tight so I don’t fall; but I already have.
My profession of love comes as a surprise, but you’re starting to meet me there. A love worth waiting for. You have so much love to give, and I want it.
Oh, the night that was intergalactic; it tore through the stars and dropped me into this reality—the one where this night never happened. The one where you broke my heart. The one where this night doesn’t have the dignity to be a memory.
Yet she exists now, if only in my mind.
The fate of EXcalibur
Stone cold; frozen in time.
I once waited for your embrace.
My blade melts into granite—trapping me here.
Is my tongue still sharp? Will my steel—still steal the shine?
The long sleep; unmoved, unanswered.
Parish churchgoers gather, many tried—
Yet none could free me from this prison.
Your hands touch mine and there’s a crack
My home—my quiet—my comfort—shatters
Restraints dissipate, and you release me.
I fall in love with my saviour; you made me powerful.
But there was a greater conquest.
You break your most prized possession.
Discarded. Mishandled. Misused.
Scrapes tarnish my silver; blade bent.
My point now dull after piercing my own heart.
Abandoned on the floor like a child tossing an old toy—
In favour of the newer model.
My biggest fear prophesied.
You knew what would destroy my soul;
I gave you a second chance,
only to be second place.
I miss my stone; my peace, my silence.
You can no longer slot me back in.
Too damaged—too broken now.
Let the vultures feast.
The Burn
Pass the parcel, around the room—
Dog-piled; faces gleefully shower mine.
Beaten until my body runs midnight.
Kicked into submission.
Punched even when I’m behaving.
That confused me.
Legs split and welcome all those who enter
Chewed up and spat on
Leather leash too tight around my neck
Black patches fill my vision—
Everything starts to slow
“You’re such a little whore, aren’t you?”
Familiar lips kiss mine—
It has been so many years since I had you
They taste different this time
No bark. No bite.
Mouth motioning love and adoration
Safety in the bedroom isn’t undesirable
Tongue spreads between my lips
The only time it’s been about my pleasure
Orgasmic notes leave my mouth
Shut the fuck up. Be quiet.
“Thank you for sharing that with me.”
Love paralysed me and I lay there after
Two tears trickled onto his chest
Unable to verbally utter any gratitude.
This man is going to be my husband.
Eleven and forty one. Mere hours before I profess my love.
It starts in my throat. Swelling red rips my face.
Scalded smile as I’m forced to continue.
The milk curdles. The coffee sears.
I run away, my whole body on fire.
My cheeks discoloured and scorched.
Sizzling steam leaks from my eyes.
Blurred vision as I debate falling into oncoming traffic—
stop this BURNING!
Shattered scream parts from those lips you nurtured.
A splintered cry from those roots you nourished.
I begged, pleaded; implored you not to abandon my charred remains.
But you had the best of intentions.
Pass the parcel, around the room
Layers of my skin torn off.
But at the centre was my core.
Stolen by your promises of our fairytale.
I didn’t know I was playing with fire.
You seemed genuine this time
Kicked, punched, slapped, choked—
You soothed me with your empty words—
then set them alight
I was still reading the pages.
You burned me.
When does it stop?
